The 1982-83 season was a memorable one for Tottenham Hotspur, not only for their consistent league performances but also for their dramatic FA Cup success from the previous season that carried over into this campaign. Managed by Keith Burkinshaw, Spurs navigated both domestic and European competitions, finishing 4th in Division 1 and making notable cup appearances. This season, they demonstrated their resilience and flair, embodying the passion and determination typical of Tottenham.

The highlight of the period leading into this season was Tottenham’s 1982 FA Cup victory over Queens Park Rangers. The original final on May 22, 1982, ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time, with each team putting in a fierce performance in front of a packed crowd of 100,000 at Wembley. Glenn Hoddle (#10), Tottenham’s talented midfielder, converted a penalty in the 6th minute, giving Spurs an early lead. However, QPR battled back, and the game ended in a deadlock, necessitating a replay.

Five days later, on May 27, 1982, Tottenham and QPR returned to Wembley for the FA Cup final replay, a rare and high-stakes encounter. This time, Tottenham managed to secure the victory with a narrow 1-0 win, again in front of 100,000 fans. Glenn Hoddle (#10) was once more the hero, scoring the only goal of the match with a penalty in the 6th minute, leading Tottenham to lift the FA Cup trophy.

Tottenham Line-Up for the FA Cup Final Replay:

  • Goalkeeper: Ray Clemence (#1) – A reliable presence between the posts, Clemence was crucial in keeping QPR from scoring.
  • Defenders: Chris Hughton (#2), Paul Miller (#3), Paul Price (#4), and captain Steve Perryman (#6) – This solid defensive lineup, led by Perryman, provided the backbone of Spurs’ performance, keeping QPR’s attackers at bay.
  • Midfielders: Micky Hazard (#5), Graham Roberts (#7), and Glenn Hoddle (#10) – Hoddle’s creativity and precision, coupled with Roberts’ hard work, allowed Spurs to control the midfield.
  • Forwards: Tony Galvin (#9), Steve Archibald (#8), and Garth Crooks (#11) – This attacking trio added dynamism to Tottenham’s front line, pressuring the QPR defense throughout the game.

Substitute: Garry Brooke (#12) came on for Micky Hazard in the 67th minute to inject fresh energy into the squad.

The match was fiercely contested, with both teams creating opportunities. However, Tottenham’s discipline and Burkinshaw’s tactical acumen helped them hold onto the lead and secure the win, adding another FA Cup to the club’s history.

The 1982-83 Season in the League and Cup Competitions:

Tottenham carried the momentum of their FA Cup victory into the new season, finishing 4th in Division 1. They won 20 of their 42 league matches, showcasing their attacking prowess with 65 goals scored across the campaign. Glenn Hoddle’s creativity in midfield and Steve Archibald’s sharp finishing contributed significantly to their league success. At home, Spurs were especially formidable, with a strong record of 15 wins and only 2 losses at White Hart Lane.

In addition to their domestic league success, Tottenham competed in various cup competitions. In the European Cup Winners’ Cup, they reached the second round, showing their capability on the European stage. However, their League Cup run ended in the 5th round, and they were runners-up in the Charity Shield, narrowly missing out on more silverware.

The 1982-83 season was marked by Tottenham’s versatility and fighting spirit. Burkinshaw’s squad was balanced with experienced players and emerging talents, creating a team that could compete at the highest levels in multiple competitions. Though they did not add further trophies to their collection this season, the foundation laid during these years contributed to Tottenham’s proud footballing legacy.
